The label

“Research Use Only” (RUO) identifies materials supplied for laboratory and scientific research. They are not drugs, foods, dietary supplements or cosmetics, are not intended for human or veterinary use, and are not for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Statements about RUO materials have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Who RUO materials are for

RUO materials are intended for qualified researchers working in appropriate laboratory settings, such as academic, institutional and private research facilities with the training, equipment and oversight to handle them safely.

Buyer responsibilities

  • Use materials only for lawful in-vitro and laboratory research.
  • Follow applicable federal, state and local laws and institutional policies.
  • Store, handle and dispose of materials safely and keep accurate records.
  • Never administer RUO materials to people or animals, or resell them for such use.

Why suppliers ask for attestations

Responsible suppliers verify age and ask buyers to confirm, in writing, that they understand and accept the research-use terms. This documents the intended use and helps keep materials in appropriate hands.
